Operandum is the UK’s only purely fee-based furniture consultancy.
Operandum was established in 2009 by Martin Stocks and a previous partner. Martin has previously headed some of the UK’s biggest furniture dealerships and consultancies, leading procurement services for multimillion-pound projects across the commercial, hospitality and residential sectors.
Nick Mann joined in 2013, bringing additional experience in manufacturing, importing, dealerships and workplace consultancy and strategic account management.
Nick Lyons joined in 2021, contributing with 30 years of furniture experience in Scotland developing professional relationships and delivering projects in a commercial client-facing role.
Operandum’s three partners are supported by an experienced team of design and planning, installation, post-project support and project management specialists.
Together, we have over 100 years’ experience working at the forefront of the furniture industry. Our consultancy team is one of the most established and consistent in the business, continuously innovating, and achieving both industry and national recognition for our work.
Martin is a co-founder of Operandum and has been in senior management and ownership roles in the furniture industry for 30 years.
Martin was responsible for designing the original Openbook furniture consultancy and procurement service for commercial office projects in 2000 and has recently developed the Operandum service to incorporate hotel and PRS (Private Rented Sector) procurement projects.
His accountancy background puts focus on delivering commercial value. He has developed a unique suite of client and supplier contracts tailored specifically to furniture procurement, giving the client comfort of performance guarantees and financial transparency and security, whilst also offering the supplier the comfort of a direct contractual relationship with the final client.

Nick has over 30 years’ experience in the office furniture sector and has worked with a range of manufacturers, dealers and distributors.
Most recently before joining Operandum in 2013 he was Director of Strategic Sales for Steelcase Solutions, the UK’s largest furniture dealership.
Nick has an ongoing interest in workplace design, helping clients identify and prepare for future trends now, while avoiding the risks associated with change. He has first-hand leadership experience of significant and complex capital furniture projects in excess of £6 million, in both commercial office and hotel procurement spaces.

Nick’s furniture career in Scotland spans 30 years, training initially as an interior designer before completing the majority of his career in a more commercial client-facing role.
At Operandum, Nick will be leading the development of professional relationships and project delivery in Scotland, with the additional support of the systems, procedures, purchasing power and project support provided by the London head office.
Nick’s experience delivering furniture projects in excess of £2m in individual value, will be significant to continue to help many multinational companies throughout Scotland to create award-winning spaces.
